Sample IRaw Mono output

December 2006

This page will be updated as we approach the beta release, but in the meantime here's some sample IRaw Mono output:

IR portrait
This is the full frame: an image taken with a PowerShot Pro1/87C at ISO 100 under studio flash.
When looking at the crops, bear in mind that the studio session was primarily for visible-light work, and she was wearing make-up (which will react to IR wavelengths differently to bare skin).

Here are some 100% crops to show the difference between the best conversion I could do with Adobe Camera RAW and the result from an early alpha version of IRaw Mono.

The tonality varies between these samples, but that can be tweaked: we will produce better samples as time permits. This comparison was put together quickly to look at the levels of noise and of detail.

The performance of dcraw is very impressive here, but the result from IRaw Mono has significantly less noise.
ACR performs worse than dcraw in this test, and that may be partly due to an interaction with the extreme white balance used here.

Keep in mind that this image was generated from an early alpha of IRaw Mono. The noise patterns, fine detail, and highlight recovery are all areas that have been getting attention in recent work.
