Supported cameras

OpenRAW.org

IRaw Mono builds on the technology in Dave Coffin's dcraw software, and as such can read RAW files generated by many cameras. This includes Adobe DNG files, which opens up the field even further. Note however that images from cameras with Foveon chips will NOT be supported.

Result with incompatible IR filter However reading the data from the RAW files is only part of the issue: the data needs to be compatible with the assumptions that IRaw Mono is going to make about it.

IR filters

The photographs must be taken with the appropriate IR filter, and the camera must have had its original IR-blocking filter replaced with either the IR-pass filter or with a clear filter to allow the use of an external IR-pass filter. If these conditions are not true, the output files will not be useful for anything (the colour information will have been mistaken for detail).

An example of this (from an EOS 300D/R72 camera, and enlarged to 200%) is shown at right. If you are seeing patterns like this across parts of your images, then it's likely that your IR filter is not compatible with IRaw Mono.

Appropriate infrared filters include:

  • Wratten 87C, 87B, 87A (not 87)
  • Schott and Heliopan RG830, RG850, RG1000
  • B+W 093, 094
  • Hoya RM-90, RM-100

Note that if your camera has internal filters that are either clear or similar to a Hoya R72 (which includes the "715nm" IR filters used in some IR conversions) you can place one of the above filters on the front of the lens. In these cases the combination of the external and internal filters will be very similar to the dark filter on its own, and IRaw Mono can be used on the resulting images. Obviously (due to the way the viewfinder and focussing works) this would be a more convenient arrangement on a "compact" camera than a DSLR...

Cameras

As noted above, IRaw Mono uses code from dcraw, and as such should be able to process files from hundreds of camera models. However it has not been tested with all of these. Khromagery modifies a range of cameras to the appropriate filters, but we do not have test images from all of these on-hand. We are building up that collection and testing as many with IRaw Mono as possible.

As long as the camera is using the appropriate IR filters, we expect that IRaw Mono will work with the following cameras. Models that we have tested are marked with (TESTED) .

Note however that even if a camera is listed here, that does not mean it can be modified to have its original IR filter removed or that its lens works well with IR. If it's on this list that's just because IRaw Mono can read the files. If you have one of these cameras with the original IR-blocking filter removed and the appropriate dark IR filter (i.e. not R72) added to give you monochrome results, please let us know so we can update this table. If you have DNG files from an otherwise-appropriate camera not on this list that works with IRaw Mono, please let us know also!
